How Filco is helping local good causes

Through our participation in Nisa’s charity, ‘Making a Difference Locally’ (MADL), we’re proud to support our communities with our biggest ever round of funding giveaways for nearly 50 local good causes.

Back in September 2020, we asked customers on our social media channels to nominate local charities, good causes and voluntary organisations. Our customers answered the call with 47 organisations chosen in need of financial help, with total donations in excess of £22,000.

Our ‘Great Giveaway with Filco’ is the latest initiative as part of Making a Difference Locally, which has raised more than £12m since it was established 12 years ago.

One of our directors, Matthew Hunt, said: “During the events of the last seven months in particular we’ve seen countless examples of the impact of the pandemic has had with a number of local good causes suffering from a drop in donations.

“We want to respond to local needs by awarding individual donations to good causes, which we hope will go some way to helping them get through this difficult period. We’re at the very heart of our communities and so are perfectly placed to help local projects in need of a little extra support.”

One of the local good causes we’ve helped is The Vale Parent/Child Homework Support Clubs, whose donation will go towards supporting over 100 children with their homework, and nearly 40 adults improve their skill levels.

Another good cause to receive funding in recent months was Shelter Cymru, who were supported with a donation to help fund provisions for local people. The group provides free, independent, expert housing advice to anyone in housing need.

We also haven’t neglected the local arts, with a donation to Cowbridge Amateur Operatic Society, who have been singing in harmony since 1969. Money has also been awarded to South Cymru Sapphires, a children’s marching display jazz band.

We’ve also given multiple donations to local sports teams and activity clubs including Llantwit Major Tennis Club, Taibach RFC, Bryn Rovers FC, Valeways, LM Events, and many others.

Nisa’s head of charity, Kate Carroll, said: “Nisa independent retailers like Filco play a huge role at the centre of their communities and have provided an incredible level of support to local good causes through MADL over the last 12 years.

“We’re delighted that Filco launched such a significant funding giveaway. This takes their overall total donated through MADL to over £70,000 since the charity began. Its phenomenal community support that will help some of the smaller local causes and projects that may have been hit hard by the pandemic and would otherwise struggle to fundraise this year.”
